Desdi snarled angrily, ready to lunge at Rigski the second he mentioned Viryen, and when he DARED to call Eridia out of control and psychotic he felt something snap…

but he restrained himself the second he heard that new voice, staring at its source with wide red eyes even as his unborn son started kicking irritably from the stress.

X fell silent as well as he stared at Nikki, the child’s anger so obvious. ”…Your Honor…why don’t we let Nikki speak for herself?” he asked nonchalantly.

Aliblu’s ears might’ve fallen if they weren’t tucked inside the hat. Wide purple eyes started to dilate back to normal as she recovered from the shock.

The judge stared at the once mute child. “Y-yes, that sounds like a wonderful idea. Nikki, can you tell us why you Godfather kidnapped you?”

“First off, I wasn’t kidnapped. I ran away.” Her voice was softer now, but still held that danger to it. “A year after Mom died, my father sent Axl away to oversee a project closer to Neo Arcadia. It wasn’t unusual, but instead of his move being temporary, this was permanent. Sure he’d come back in the winter, but it wasn’t the same. I missed having him there when I needed help with a project or when the instructor’s explanation wasn’t making sense? He’d help me understand. Axl always made time for me.Father never did. I missed my godfather, so I ran away to try and find him.”

Desdi snickered to himself. He idly wondered if Luna had eaten the little bugger yet. Then again she didn’t seem to have indigestion so she probably hadn’t.

“Not to mention he’s controlled. Maybe he’s not under YOUR control, but he is controlled.” Aliblu’s tone was cold and flat. “He isn’t capable of any further damage than a bucket of pudding to the head. Which would have to be well-earned, by the way.”

Rigski growled. “The defendant was also see conversing with a known Maverick. The same man who the girl was staying with after her kidnapping. “

Again with the kidnapping. When were they going to realize she RAN AWAY of her own free will.

“The same man who ‘married’ a ‘reformed’ Dark Elf…”

A blue eye twitched. That grease stain better shut up.

The voice was hoarse and cracking from years of disuse, but it rang through the room with a graceful echo. Wide green eyes looked at his goddaughter in shock. Six years…and it finally returned to her. Tears spilled as he gazed upon the angry face so much like her mother’s.

Nikki had her voice back…

X returned to his seat to allow Aliblu to show his info, casting a glare to Rigski. Desdi spoke up first.

“If it was impossible, how was Mother Elf able to purify Mavericks and restore them to how they once were, still fully functioning and with no errors?” he spat.

Aliblu walked over with a proper posture as she handed the folder over. “These were verified by a Lifesaver unit as well. It was a very complicated process, and Lumine did nearly go offline, but he did not. He functions without any harmful thoughts to humanity as he once displayed, and even runs a modest job of catering. He can hardly be called Maverick.” And Rigski had earned himself a venomous glare from the bunny for the insult to her husband-to-be.

“What about that mischievous cyber elf that is seen with him while he’s in the city? It’s a menace!” Rigski cried. face flustered.

Nikki had to hold in a smile of laughter. He only brought that up cause Mav had dumped a bucket of mud on his ‘$1,000 suit’. She had taken a picture of it and it was now in her scrapbook. The brunette had even shown it to Ali Desdi once when the elf visited.

“If you mean to talk of Lumine, he is not a Maverick.” She cooly held up a folder. “These are records stating that Lumine does not have any trace of the Maverick Virus in him, nor does he display any Maverick tendencies towards others. In fact, he has become an almost model citizen.” The very records Lifesaver himself had looked over.

The prosecutors glared at her as the judge motioned her to bring her the folder. Rigski barely covered his rage. “How did such an endeavor even work? It was said the virus was literally ingrained in their systems from the beginning. How is he still functioning without the virus? It is impossible.”

Nikki smiled proudly. ‘Show them not to mess with family, Ms. Ali.’

X nodded his thanks and approached the stand to show the records. The records showed all errors—minor, moderate, and major—and the actions taken to correct them, along with the date they were discovered. The scans took quite a while before he was deemed clear, but the date stamps showed that as time passed, fewer errors were found and all were corrected.

“As you can see, these records are set prior to Axl even meeting Nikki’s mother. He has been completely clear for years.”

Aliblu watched as X presented the records. She’d looked over the papers as well, and knew they had likely gained a step by doing their homework. She glanced to Nikki. ‘Just hang in there darling’, she thought as she brought her attention back to the trial.

Trill nodded. “Impressive presentation. He was released with green systems ten years before they met it seems. Thank you.”

Rigski growled and quickly shifted his papers for something, then smirked. “Your Honor, the defense stated that Maverick counts have decreased throughout the years. However, the defendant socializes with several identified Mavericks and even left the daughter with one when he kidnapped her.”

Both Axl and Nikki looked up in anger. ‘Oh HELL NO! He better not be going there!’

X’s turn again. He had already gotten the next record. ”He sealed himself away as a precaution, and scans and processes removed any possible threats from Axl’s programming. The pod ran several scans afterward before deeming him safe to release.” He stood, holding the results of the scans. ”Your Honor, if I may?”

Aliblu was no longer in the seat. Without anyone’s notice, a very strange calm had overcome the bunny, but if X and Desdi were to notice and look under the brim of her hat, they would’ve seen red eyes staring at the brim coldly.

The mention of what had happened to Axl because of Lumine had brought out Skarlette, who was holding Aliblu’s appearance together rather well. Soon enough, Skarlette managed to calm Aliblu down, her eyes changed back to purple.

The judge nodded her consent. She was keeping a good poker face, but she was getting very interested in this back and forth. It was like tennis to her. Verbal tennis.

Like Aliblu, Nikki was having trouble keeping her cool. She knew Axie wasn’t on the best of terms with Lumine, but they were getting better and more civil, kinda like brothers mending a trust that was once broken. And that jerk was treading very close to family territory. If he tried to bad mouth her family, she was going to unleash a few choice words.

Desdi crossed his arms under his chest. ”Scans have proven that Axl has not only can’t turn Maverick, but records show that the number of Mavericks has drastically decreased since your outdated records were taken. Axl has also proven fully capable of defending anyone and taking out multiple high-level Mavericks on his own. And a full background check is required before one can consider joining the Maverick Hunters—Axl was the one who ended the Red Alert crisis in the seventh uprising.”

Both bunnies had frozen in the seat at the information. How in Wonderland’s Darkland had they found out about that?! But Aliblu and Skarlette forced themselves to recover quickly; this was battle, just without sword swinging and blood. They needed to be level-headed.

Trill had raised an eyebrow at the male-sounding female, but didn’t comment on it, merely nodded at the information. “Yes, I had heard stories as a child of a non-hunter who had aided the legends X and Zero in the battle against Red Alert.”

A quick glance at the prosecutors showed they were fighting to keep their faces straight and not burst in rage. “We have evidence that the defendant was possibly infected through other means. After the war against the new-gens, before the Elf Wars, the defendant disappeared with no trace to be found. It is believed that it was because he was infected in the final battle against Sigma and the new gen Maverick, Lumine.”

Axl felt his chest tighten and felt like crying. Where did he get all this information about him?

This time X let Aliblu take the defense. Desdi gripped at the fabric of his dress, wanting to go next, but he’d go after Aliblu.

“Axl has never been shown to be a threat to Nikki’s safety. In fact, it can be said his presence in her life has had a very positive impact.” Aliblu responded. Much more positive than that disgusting snake, but she kept that in her mind.

Judge Trill nodded before looking at Rigski. “With all due respect, Your Honor, the defendant is a reploid who was once a Maverick Hunter, an SA-class one at that. Not only that, but before his enlistment to the Hunters, he was part of a mercenary group called Red Alert. Many reploids may still have grudges against him. Even now he defends the restoration projects from Mavericks. What’s to say Mevericks won’t come for him at his home and attack the girl?”

The judge’s eyes widened a bit and Axl felt his insides chill. How did he find all that out? Weren’t the records of his Red Alert days sealed? How did a human find out about it over a century after the war was over?

Axl has full rights as stated in this document to raise Nikki in the event that Dr. Hoshina isn’t present to do so himself.”

Aliblu lowered her head, watching through narrowed eyes as she listened. Hopefully the judge would know any bullshit from Nikki’s father if he tried anything.

Rigski was on that statement quickly. “Your Honor, my client is the head of a company that provides restoration efforts all over the world. Coupled with losing his wife six years ago have been very stressful, it has been difficult for him to spend time with his daughter with all the useful breakthroughs his company has been accomplishing.”

She didn’t look impressed with either of them as she nodded anyway. “Even though the defendant was named the godfather at her birth, it is possible for the title to be taken away if, and only if, enough evidence is provided that he is a threat to the child. Most times these are based solely on documents and facts, but am I correct to assume that the defendant has some verbal witness statements to be made?”

X and Desdi took their seats with Axl, casting glares at Dr. Hoshina. When Nikki’s full name was announced, the two exchanged glances. They didn’t know her full name; it was very nice though.

Aliblu had to force her ears from perking as she heard Nikki’s full name. It was simply gorgeous, at least to her, and scowled at the thought that it might be changed. That could not be allowed.

The bailiff opened the door for the judge, a stern looking, elderly female who look like she wouldn’t take shit from anyone. “Judge Trill has entered, all rise.” The lanky blonde just waved. “Keep your seats, I don’t need anyone throwing a fit in my court again.”

Axl blinked at the lady’s attitude. This might help or hurt them. He wasn’t sure. “Now why is an 11 year old girl in my courtroom with family pitted against each other?” she asked briskly.

Rigski stood. “Your honor, my client wishes for his daughter to be returned to him and the title of Godfather stripped from the defendant for the accusations of kidnapping the girl from Abel City and keeping her away from her father.”

She frowned and turned to X. “What does the defendant have to say to the accusations?”

X and Desdi followed Axl and Nikki, X motioning for Aliblu to follow them. Time to shoot that bastard down once and for all. Perhaps get a restraining order against him?

Aliblu followed her parents closely, not wanting to be anywhere near the humans. Her fingers twitched and curled, but Skarlette soothed her, no no Blu no magic yet. Wait until its secured, then go blasting them.

Nikki wanted to whine and protest when she was instructed to sit in another part of the room, but Axl kissed her forehead and reassured her it would be alright. Thankfully, she wasn’t sitting next to the prosecutors. Then there would have been problems.

“If you would all take your seats, we can proceed with the custody battle for 11 year old Nikki Amira Krasivyy Hoshina.” A smile came to Axl’s and Nikki’s faces. Krasivyy was Aleena’s maiden name and Amira was her grandmother’s name. Both were happy that her name hadn’t been changed to just her father’s family name.

The water drained enough that, though unresponsive, Zero reflexively coughed some more of the water.

The redhead perked at the cough, but frowned. He was still unconscious. At least the water was almost completely gone. “Now for the difficult part.” he murmured to himself.

Reaching out again, he ‘nudged’ Zero’s reboot procedures. It would take a while for him to scan the systems and clear out the errors by himself, but the reboot would hopefully wake Zero enough to give him a hand so he didn’t make a mistake. After all, he knew nothing about this Zero. All he had to go by was his own Zero’s system.

This morning I was in a rush, not all morning, it just sort of crept up on me and before I knew it, there was little time left in the morning. I’d had my shower, I had to braid my daughter’s glorious head of hair, and we had to get out the door. My mind was dwelling on other things… I was not present… I was mentally worrying my “TO DO LIST”

Exam… tax return due… groceries needing to be done… sheets on bed needing to be changed… load of washing to hang out… a few bills to pay… pay for my yoga lessons… and don’t forget Master 7′s school assembly…

I was certainly not present, too busy mired in the future to recognise the gifts of the present.

My daughter sat in front of me, we were already late. She had selected her hair ties and I was braiding her hair. I asked Master 7 to go and get Miss 5′s school bag, because we really needed to be motor. He did. He plonked it down in front of her and declared that her bag was overly heavy.

I cracked.

The morning before Miss 5 had had a major problem finding some “news” to take to school. She wanted to take toys, toys is not really the done thing, and she and I had had to compromise over the “news” item. I berated her because I was tired of having to come up with last minute news items five minutes before walking out the door, and this seemed to me to be a normal occurrence putting a fly in the morning ointment. I had spoken with her about being more organised and muttered inwardly about priorities etc. I was not being a very mindful Mummy at all.

Then yesterday… as we were leaving school, I noticed that Miss 5′s bag was inordinately heavy. I commented on it, and she promised to empty it when we got home.

So when I saw the heavy bag plonked in front of me, I didn’t see a bag.

I didn’t see a moment of forgetfulness.

I didn’t see my beautiful daughter.

I morphed into an angry bull with a red flag waving obnoxiously in front of me, I dug in my heels, I roared and I CHARGED!!!

“If you weren’t so lazy last night then you would have emptied your bag and it wouldn’t be so heavy right now”.

Yeah, I said that.

Miss 5 promptly burst into tears.

“Mummy, we don’t say those sort of words” she sobbed. ”Mummy, I am not lazy, that was not nice”

Master 7 stood. He looked at me right in the eyes, and he said. “Mummy, that was really mean what you just said” he paused. He looked right into me again, and then he dealt me the kicker. ”Mummy, that does not fit with the values in our house, we don’t say things like that in this family”.

Cut. Down. To. Size.

By my SEVEN year old.

Did I get angry that he had talked back to me? That they had BOTH talked back to me.

No. NOT. FOR. ONE. SECOND.

I felt like laughing, I felt like cheering, I felt like I had run a marathon and I was passing the finishing line, my kids had talked BACK TO ME. YUSSSSSSS!!!!! Why did I feel so fantastic, why did my heart then swell with love. Why did I then pull my daughter in and apologise to her profusely, and hug her tightly?

Because of this.

My children do not fear me. They know what is right and what is wrong, and they have NO FEAR in telling me when I get it wrong. They know our family values so clearly, so profoundly that they can talk back to me when I get it wrong.

In that moment, my love for them was so fierce that I could have cried, and for the rest of this day you have not been able to wipe the grin off my face. My kids GET IT. They get that labelling people is not ok, and they know that I love them so unconditionally that when I label them, they are not afraid to call me on it.

Let your kids talk back. They need to know how to. If they can’t talk back to you, then how on EARTH will they be able to talk back to the kid who is telling them to do something that they know they shouldn’t. Let them talk back to you, let them tell you all about it, let them know you love them so much that they need not fear your response.
